November BOE Minutes

The board met in regular session on November 12, 2007 at the Bern School, Bern, KS.

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by President Brian Deters.  The agenda was approved.

Administrative Reports:

Principals Bob Bartkoski, Patrick Graham and Jim Struber updated the board on school activities.  Summerfield School report included the Veteran’s Day program, parent-teacher conference participation and Halloween activities.  The Axtell School report included the blood drive held on November 8; the Axtell/Summerfield Site Council meeting; parent-teacher conference participation; and on the upcoming OTL music festival.  The Bern School report included Site Council meeting information; college planning day at Valley Heights; the Scholar’s Bowl season has begun; the school will be hosting the 1A Regional basketball tournament; a request from the Vo Ag class was shared.  Supt. Bartkoski shared the Fire Marshal Inspection information from all three attendance centers and concerns that need to be addressed with the report and apprised the board of the property damage/theft from the break in at the Axtell School on November 6, 2007. Preliminary estimates of loss are:  personal property $921; equipment $7,000 and damage to facility $700 for a total of $8621.00.

Consent Agenda:

         The November claim vouchers were approved.

         Approved hiring Marcia Hocker as a regular ed para at the Bern School.

 Old Business:

         A discussion was held concerning Jr. High football.  Consensus of the board was to continue to have separate football programs as long as there are enough players to form a team.  The issue will be revisited in the fall of 2008 and will be decided on a year by year basis.

         A discussion was held concerning 6th graders playing “A” team sports.  Board consensus was that coaches should decide which students they play regardless of what grade they are in.

         The board approved a lease for $1.00 per year for use of the Bern Community Track that is currently being developed.

New Business:

         Approval was given to raise the cost of extra milk in USD #488 to $.30 per carton beginning December 19th.

         Information was shared concerning the KSHSAA regulations concerning using school owned football equipment for summer contact football camps.

         The board approved paying for one teacher at the elementary, junior high and high school level at the Bern School to get certified in the ELL teacher certification program.

Executive Session:

Executive sessions were held concerning personnel and student issues.

         The board approved a modification to the contract of Barb Volle for the 07-08 school year.

         The board toured the Bern School.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:21 p.m. The next regular meeting of the board will be on December 10, 2007, at the district office in Axtell.
