Baroa, Hildur, Heini and Helgi returned to visit.

5th & 6th Grades Learn about Foreign Lands

by Janet Argo

December 07, 2007

On October 17th the 5th and 6th grade class at Summerfield was privileged to have guests in their classroom from the Faroe Islands.  Baroa was once an exchange student that stayed with Sharon and Gary Kabriel of Summerfield.  Baroa was here with her family visiting the Kabriels.  She has an eleven-year old son, Helgi Heinason; a three-year old daughter, Hildur Heinadottir; and husband, Heini Tausen.  Since Helgi was a fifth grader, he thought it would be interesting to visit an American school.  The class also thought it would be exciting to have a student visit from another country.  Helgi told the class about himself and answered questions from the students.  He talked to the class in three languages, English, Faroese, and Dutch.  Baroa wrote the Faroese alphabet on the marker board and noted it has 31 characters.  She also gave the class four web sites to visit to learn more about the Faroe Islands.

Major Steve O'Neil poses with 5th & 6th grade students.

The Summerfield 5th and 6th grades were honored to have Major Steve O’Neil, his wife, Sheila and son, Devin, visit our classroom. Steve recently returned from Iraq where he was a Blackhawk pilot.  He now works at the Armed Forces Reserve Center at Forbes Field in Topeka.  He is the Unit Administrative Officer.  Steve showed pictures of his unit in Iraq, the buildings, equipment, and Blackhawks.  The students really enjoyed seeing the pictures of the inside of the palace, the helicopters, and all his interesting stories of his experiences in Iraq.  Steve answered many questions from the students and teachers. Major Steve O’Neil is a former student of Mrs. Argo and uncle to Shawn O’Neil.
