Bill Talks About Bullying

by Loren Hulsing

January 17, 2008

Bill Biermann, of Southwest Plains Regional Service Center, came to Axtell High School to talk about "bullying in school".  His presentation started out with the Junior High students, first distributing a playing card to each of them for a game called the "Poker" game.  The game consisted of the ranking of the cards.  The people holding face cards were the the most special, the middle cards were people that were average or acknowledgeable, and cards from 2-5 were considered as the scum of the earth.  This game was supposed to show the students how it feels to be popular and bullied.

After the Junior High kids were done, it was the high school students' turn.  Bill told us how students are treated by bullies and that even though we might not do any of the bullying ourselves, we still have a part in it because we didn't do anything to make that person that was being bullied feel better about themselves and we didn't try to stop the harassment.  He also told us that everyone is a potential bully.

One thing that Bill emphasized was that we need to treat others the way that they want to be treated.  Mr. Biermann also stated that everyone has two choices, they can either "put you up" or "put you down".
