On Thursday, January 31, Natahan Hollis, Stuart O'Neil, James Shaughnessy, Adam Ronnebaum, and Deacon Ludwig were just five boys taking a trip to Blue Valley Randolph in hopes of securing a trip to Southern Coffey County High School for the 2008 1A State Scholars Bowl competition to be held February 9th.
The boys had a rough semi-final round finishing 2-3 in pool play. Axtell was the wild card coming out of pool play entering the final round. They started the finals round with a 3-0 record and in the lead. All they needed to do was beat Pike Valley and they would be on their way to State. The Eagles were not able to beat Pike Valley so they had to win their last game. Wakefield was the team they needed to beat and the boys pulled out a 20-10 victory. With the win, the Eagles finished 4-1 and won Regionals, paving the road to Coffey County High School for the 2008 1A Scholars Bowl competition.
Nathan Hollis says, "As a team, we came out and did what we had to do to get to State. I think the hours of practice is finally starting to pay off. We'll continue to work our tails off to prepare for the state meet. For the next week we will focus heavily on the Fine Arts and Language Arts and hopefully bring home 1st place."
