District Office: Board of Education

February BOE Meeting

  The board met in regular session on February 11, 2008 at the Summerfield School.

 

  The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by President Brian Deters.  The agenda was approved.

Administrative Reports:

Principals Bob Bartkoski, Patrick Graham and Jim Struber updated the board on school activities. 

  The Axtell School Report by Mr. Graham shared information about the scholar’s bowl team going to state; gave a report on athletic activities and that the ASCS day care went well.  

  Supt. Bartkoski updated the board on the grant with Sabetha to help reduce underage drinking; information was shared on the results from the consignment auction items; informed the board of the results from the State of Kansas Auditor and the Summerfield School report included the spelling bee results, book fair results and that the city will work with the school to trim the trees on the school grounds. 

  The Bern School report by Mr. Struber included information on the sports teams, Scholar Bowl teams and on assessment testing schedules.  He also told the board that Bern will be hosting the 1A basketball regionals.

 

Consent Agenda:

         The February claim vouchers were approved.

         Accepted a resignation from Mischelle Cragg as the Bern Cheerleader Co-Sponsor.

 

Old Business:

         Information was shared about the procedures of an energy audit for the school district.

         Board members prioritized the needs of each school building.  The board members from each site worked together to determine the priorities for the building.  The at-large member spent time with each group discussing priorities.

         A discussion was held concerning policy KGA Use of District Owned Personal Property and Equipment.

New Business:

         The Bern Senior trip itinerary was approved.

         A Letter of Understanding between the Board of Education and the Teacher’s Association regarding the procedure to be used in making up for the instructional time lost due to inclement weather for the remainder of the 07-08 school year was approved.

         Supt. Bartkoski was authorized to secure bids for 2 buses, a 71 and 52 passenger, new and used bids will be sought.  Final prices for a 4WD 9 passenger suburban and pricing for a 7-8 passenger van will also be requested.

         Bus drivers who use engine block heaters for the diesel buses will be reimbursed for their electricity usage.  An annual payment in May was approved.

         The board discussed the 2008-09 projected school calendar.

         Board members took a tour of the Summerfield School.

Executive Session:

  Executive sessions were held concerning personnel and student issues and employer-employee negotiations. 

  The meeting was adjourned at 10:55 p.m. The next regular meeting of the board will be on March 10 2008, at the district office in Axtell.
