April BOE Minutes

   The board met in regular session on April 14, 2008 at the district office in Axtell, KS.

 

   Supt. Bartkoski updated the board on several items.  A KASB workshop and Spring Regional Meeting coming up in May.  The first step of the energy audit will be in early May; May 14 will be the seniors last day and the last day of school will be May 21 for students and May 23 for teachers.  USD 488, Axtell-Bern-Summerfield Superintendent. Bob Bartkoski, Board President Brian Deters and Vice President Rod Edelman met on March 31, 2008 with B&B’s Superintendent Jerry Turner , Board President Dale Sudbeck and Vice President Nick Holthaus at the district office in Axtell.  The following 4 areas were discussed: sharing of transportation, sharing of teachers, cooperative agreements of academic and athletic programs and consolidation of the 2 districts as a last resort as it relates to legislative action in Topeka.

 

   Mr. Struber reported on the FCCLA star event results and that 2 students qualified for State; several people qualified to go to the state music festival; the preschool screening was held on April 11 and he reported that state assessment testing is almost complete. 

 

   Mr. Graham reported that the Jr/Sr play went well; gave an update on the 2008-09 class schedule development; the ASCS group remodeled the teacher’s workroom; senior sneak updates; the Farm Safety Day is scheduled on May 9th, NHS students will be going to a Royals game and that the sports banquet is scheduled for May 7th

 

   Mr. Bartkoski reported that the Summerfield School book fair is coming up; the city has been trimming trees around the school; K-6 Fun Day is scheduled for May 7th and that the students will attend the Farm Safety Day at Axtell.

Representative Steve Lukert gave a legislative update to the board.

 

Consent Agenda:

   March Minutes and April claim vouchers were approved.

         A request was approved for non-resident attendance for the Abraham Leibbrandt family to attend school in USD #488.

         Trent Platt and Brian Rottinghaus were approved as the summer custodial helpers and Bern and Axtell.

 

Old Business:

         One new course of Personal Finance will be added as a graduation requirement beginning with incoming freshmen in 08-09 and an additional elective course of the Cord Applied Math Program will be offered at the high school level beginning in the 08-09 school year.

         The board discussed implementing a district wide communication system that would automate calls to parents and staff was tabled until next month.

         Approval was given to implement a cross country program at the Axtell School beginning in the fall of 2008.

         The board authorized the superintendent to solicit bids for a used bus.

 

New Business:

   Executive Sessions were held to discuss personnel, student issues and negotiations.

         Resignations were accepted from Elly Geyer as Bern Kindergarten/Title I teacher and Patrick Graham as the Axtell High School Principal.

         Certified teaching staff were approved for the 2008-09 school year were:  Janet Argo; Lisa Broxterman; Scott Brumbaugh, Julie Droge, Gena Fritz, Francine Haverkamp, Tony Howser; Rose Kuckelman; Holly Meyer; Larry Meyer; Pam Mitchell; Kathi Novotny; Jackie Olberding; Trent Platt; Brian Rottinghaus; Kathie Rueger; Rick Schnacker; Margaret Schulte; Cheryl Sejkora; Sonja Stoll; Kristin Strathman; Kevin Turowski; Louis Vieselmeyer; Barb Volle; Pam Walker; SueAnn Wanklyn and Anne Werner.  Tenure was granted to Kathie Rueger and Kristin Strathman.

 

   The meeting adjourned at 10:19 p.m.  The next regular meeting of the board will be on May 12, 2006 at the district office in Axtell.
