May BOE Minutes

   The board met in regular session on May 12, 2008 at the district office in Axtell, KS.

   A budget hearing was held to approve the amended budget.

   Supt. Bartkoski updated the board on several items.  All staff and faculty in all three schools are attending the CPR/AED classes this spring and summer and Pre-School screenings have been completed with approximately 26 attending at Summerfield and Bern.

   Mr. Struber reported on the track season progress; Bern Park project; Tentative class schedule was presented; Awards Assembly and that the Community Potluck will be held on Wednesday, May 21. 

   Mr. Graham reported on the track season; spring concert; NHS trip to a Royals Game; Awards Banquet; Farm Safety Day and on Graduation plans. 

   Mr. Bartkoski reported that the Summerfield School has been busy with field day; farm safety day; spring concert, kindergarten roundup and field trips.  He also publically thanked Bill Smith, Butch Renz, the City of Summerfield and the Axtell football team and coaches for getting the tree trimming and clean up at the Summerfield School done.

Consent Agenda:

   April Minutes and May claim vouchers were approved.

              Resignations were accepted from Jon Smeeton as Bern Physical Education teacher; Larry Grose as Bern head girls basketball coach; Mark Farwell as Bern assistant girls basketball and head volleyball coach and Mindy Sudbeck as Bern assistant volleyball coach.

                    Approved employment for Scott Brumbaugh as Driver’s Ed instructor for the 07-08 school year.

                    Approved teacher contracts for Stacie Buessing as Axtell Junior High teacher at 65% time; Curtis Gutsch as Bern Physical Education teacher; Heidi Strathman as Bern Kindergarten/Title I teacher for the 2008-09 school year.

                    Brian Rottinghaus, Scott Brumbaugh and Trent Platt were approved as summer strength coaches.

                    Marcia Hocker was approved as Bern summer custodial help and Kathie Platt was approved for part time help with Bern mowing.

 

Old Business:

                    A report on the energy audit was reviewed and any action was tabled until the June meeting.

                    The board approved soliciting bids for two new or used 36 to 43 passenger buses.

                    Approval was given to purchase a medium size water gun from Galen Froese Irrigation in Buhler, Kansas for the Axtell practice field at a price of $8150.00.

 

New Business:

                    The board reviewed the Bern Discipline Report with no action taken.

                    The board accepted the Reapportionment Committee recommendation to move from a 3 member district with one at-large member to a 6 member district with one at-large member.

 

Executive Session:

    An executive session was held to discuss personnel, student issues and negotiations.

                    Supplemental duties were tabled until the June meeting.

                    Approval was given to offer the Axtell High School Principal contract to Brian Rottinghaus and to advertise the Social Studies opening at the Axtell School.

    The meeting adjourned at 10:18 p.m.  The next regular meeting of the board will be on June 9, 2008 at the district office in Axtell.
