The board met in regular session on June 9, 2008 at the district office in Axtell, KS.
Administrative reports included end of the year wrap ups for sports; updates on summer custodial projects; new copy machines are installed in all buildings; gym floor refinishing is complete at all schools; a drivers education update and a summer school update.
Consent Agenda:
May Minutes and June claim vouchers were approved.
• Resignations were accepted from Jim Struber as Bern Principal; Betty Rottinghaus as Bern cook and Trent Platt as the Bern head football coach.
Old Business:
• The energy audit was discussed with no action taken.
• The bus bids submitted for May 30, 3008 were rejected. The board approved soliciting bids for two new 42 passenger buses.
• The discipline committee report was discussed.
• The resolution to change the method of election only in USD #488 was approved. Changing from a three member district to a six member district will be voted on at the August primary election.
• A discussion was held regarding the increase in fixed cost expenses due to rising fuel costs. Ideas on ways to reduce costs were explored.
• A discussion was held regarding changing the location of the Bern Principal’s office.
New Business:
• Bryan Schmitz from SBS Insurance was present to review the district insurance policy with the board including rates and coverage.
• The board authorized the superintendent to make the year end transfers to finish out the 2007-08 budget.
Executive Session:
An executive session was held to interview candidates for the Bern High School principal vacancy.
An executive session was held to discuss personnel, student issues and negotiations.

• The board approved contracts for the 08-09 school year for the 12 month classified employees to include: Marian Hasenkamp, Linda Lattimer, Donna Heinen, Jackie Rokey, Leon Mosteller, Linda Backer, Rose Bernasek, Butch Renz, Ann Shaughnessy and Carol Kuckelman.
• The board discussed attending the meeting of superintendents and board presidents with the special ed cooperative school districts to discuss ways to share services.
The meeting adjourned at 10:35 p.m. The next regular meeting of the board will be on July 14, 2008 at the district office in Axtell.
