For the past week the communications class has been learning how to read children's books aloud to an audience. They spent several days practicing the skills required to captivate a young listener. During this practice they focused on creating distinct voices for different characters, portraying emotions through their voice and facial expressions, reading at the proper volume and rate, and showing pictures to the audience. After reading their chosen children's books to the communications class, the students were ready for the culmination of the children's book project: reading the books to the elementary students. Cortney, Liz, and Anna read "Diary of a Worm," "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom," and "Green Eggs and Ham" to the preschool. Valerie and Morgan read "Oliver's Milk Shake" and "Snow Friends" to the kindergarten. Jennifer and Mary read "Dear Polar Bear..." and "Goose Goofs Off" to the first grade. Dillon and Emily read "The Rainbow Fish" and "The Berenstain Bears and the Messy Room" to the second and third grades. Sean, Laura, and Jasmin read "The Berenstain Bears and the Missing Dinosaur Bone," "Way Home," and "One Halloween Night" to the fifth and sixth grades. Overall, the project was a great success, and both the communications and elementary students enjoyed the experience.
