The Simulator

by Michelle Peschel

October 17, 2008

On the afternoon of Tuesday, October 7th, a recruiter from the North Central Kansas Technical College in Beloit brought the CAT Virtual Training Systems PC-Based Simulator. This is a trailer that has three chairs with controls and flat screen monitors inside, as well as, a computer system.  One of the chairs simulates a road grader and the other two simulate an excavator.  After the recruiter explained the process for running each of the two pieces of equipment, students were were each given two minutes to "run" the equipment.  This gave the students an opportunity to see what it is like to operate heavy equipment and gave them basic understanding and techniques used in heavy equipment operation.

Some of the students thought it would be easy, but soon found out if wasn't as easy as they thought.  One student mentioned she runs a skid loader all the time, but soon found out the simulator was harder than the skid loader.  Students thought the simulator was a cool, fun, experience and had a blast running it.
