Axtell School

"Can the Principal" a Success

by Cindy Kaster

October 18, 2008

The "Can the Principal" food drive, sponsored by AHS National Honor Society, was a huge success this year.  Everyone got in on the action, students, faculty & staff, and parents.

W
e had 1987 food items total between Summerfield and Axtell.  Summerfield Elementary won with 1023 items.  Axtell High School came in a close second with 958 items.  Mr. Bartkoski will be looking forward to his pizza which Mr. Rottinghaus owes him.  At the high school, staff came in first with Seniors in second place.  To round out the competition, eighth grade was third followed by the sophomores, seventh grade, Juniors, and freshmen.

Taking every thing to the food bank was a very emotional experience.  One of the women, who volunteers, was so overwhelmed with emotion that she cried.  She brought tears to my eyes.  They were so grateful for all of the food.  One gentlemen said, "we all were angels" and then he said that "people like to say kids now days are bad, but you guys have proven that kids still have a lot of good in them."  We unloaded everything out of the vehicles and then we unloaded the boxes for them.  We had six big tables overflowing with food.  The newspaper took pictures and I told them that the really amazing thing is that we are a small school with a little over 200 staff and students combining both schools and it is amazing to me how many items we collected.

One of the women at the food bank talked a bit about how many families they help.  She told us there have been several people laid off from work in the area and are having a hard time making end meets.  She told the story of a man who cried when they took meat out of the freezer.  He told them he had not had hamburger in a long time because he had been surviving on squirrel meat.

I think the students that went today were touched and hopefully they come back and tell the others about it.  I am so overwhelmed with emotion when I think about what our students and staff have done and how they have come together for this project.  I may be biased a bit, but I think we have the best students in the country!

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO CONTRIBUTED TO THE FOOD DRIVE!
