Mrs. Novotny Receives Target Field Trip Grant
February 20, 2009
The Axtell Jr. High science program, headed by Kathi Novotny, is the recipient of an $800 field trip grant from the Target Corporation. Mrs. Novotny submitted the grant application early this year for this trip, and was selected by Target as a winner. With this grant, Mrs. Novotny will be taking all the Axtell Jr. High students to the Kansas Cosmosphere in Hutchinson in April. Target has provided the information below as a description of its program.
Congratulations Mrs. Novotny for receiving this honor!
With the nation’s schools facing increasing budget shortages each year, field trips are often one of the first elements eliminated from the curriculum. The Target Field Trip Grants Program, which launched in September 2006, distributed 5,000 grants totaling $4 million in funds this year to education professionals to help fill this gap, so that teachers may continue using the valuable experiential learning gained from field trips to enhance students’ classroom studies.
Criteria for the selection of grant recipients included: the description of the field trip and its objectives, the benefits to students, the tie-in to the school curriculum, the number of students who would be impacted and the proposed use of funds. Funds may be used to cover cost of transportation, entry fees, supplies and equipment, and resource materials. Winning field trips must take place during the 2009 calendar school year.
Applications for the 2009/2010 Target Field Trip Grants Program will be available online at Target.com/fieldtrips beginning in September 2009. Starting mid-March, teachers can visit the site to find a complete list of winners, field trip ideas, and free downloadable field trip resources.
The Target Field Trip Grants Program further demonstrates the company’s commitment to educational support for America’s schools. With growing budget shortages and educational programs being cut, Target has listened to the funding needs of teachers. As a cornerstone of the giving program, Target educational programs focus on supporting K-12 teachers and classrooms and early childhood reading. Target also supports communities through local grant donations. Since opening its doors, Target has given five percent of its income to organizations that support education, the arts, social services and volunteerism. Today that translates to over $3 million every week.
THANK YOU TARGET FOR SUPPORTING EDUCATION!
