Forensics' Summary 2008-2009

by Bonnie Baurle, Forensics' Coach

May 19, 2009

Shakespeare said, “All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players.  "There are many interpretations to this saying but most revolve around the fact that we all have roles in life that we must play, and in everything we do people are watching our actions. What better way to prepare for the world’s stage then to participate in Forensics?

This year Axtell High School has embarked on the journey of creating a Forensics team. The team consisted of 10 members: Maggie Burger, Jamie Deters, Chelsie Duryea, Taylor Jesse, Danielle Lyons, Hillary Mitchell, Sierra Perry, Austin Schmitz, Lindsey Smith, and Sheela Zimmerling. Throughout the year, these students have been preparing various pieces and competing with them at different tournaments. They have prepared pieces in the areas of prose, poetry, informative & persuasive speeches, solo acting, duet acting, and improvised duet acting.

As a team they have competed at four tournaments. January began the season where they competed at the Sabetha Invitational Tournament. The season continued on into February with the team traveling to Hanover for the Twin Valley League Tournament and to Marysville for their Annual Invitational Meet. The final tournament found the team in Washington, Kansas to participate in the Washington Country Invitational Tournament.

The year went well and the students grew tremendously, not only in their acting, speaking, and public presence, but in their self-confidence and abilities to present themselves professionally. This season ended with four students competing at the state level. Seniors, Hillary Mitchell and Maggie Burger competed at State Forensics Championships at Salina Central High School in the area of Improvised Duet Acting. They finished their career in Forensics with a great experience at State Championship. The other two students, senior, Chelsie Duryea and sophomore, Taylor Jesse competed at State Forensics Championship at Kansas Wesleyan University and they also did an excellent job.

Ican say with confidence that every member enjoyed their Forensics experience this year and they all feel more prepared for life after high school. No matter what you choose to do after high school, Forensics can help you. In life we must all speak to people we do not know, and many times give speeches in front of an audience. With Forensics’ experience, these tasks become easier. These forensics students will now not be mere players on the world’s stage, but the stars of their own lives.
