November BOE Minutes 09

November 11, 2009

  The board met in regular session on November 9, 2009 at the Bern High School Commons area in Bern, KS.

    The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by President Brian Deters.  The agenda was approved.

Administrative Reports:

    Supt. Bartkoski gave a report concerning the bus repairs covered under warranty and taken to Wichita.

    Principal Rick Schnacker gave a report on Parent Teacher Conference participation; the Veterans Day Program; Site Council Agenda; Early Release Inservice Agenda and the Standard of Excellence results.  

    Principal Brian Rottinghaus gave a report on the Standard of Excellence results; Fall basketball participant numbers; a change in the Board of Regents curriculum; Early Release Inservice Agenda and College planning activities for the juniors and seniors. 

    Principal Bob Bartkoski shared the Parent/Teacher conference participation; shared the Standard of Excellence results; Veteran’s Day Program was held and that a Fire Safety Program by the Summerfield Volunteer Fire Department was held.

Consent Agenda:

  • The November warrants were approved.
  • The Board of Education minutes were approved.

Old Business:

  • A discussion was held of district restructuring options.  The board authorized the superintendent to set up meetings with area school boards to discuss options.

New Business:

  • John Kuenzi representing the Bern Community group gave a presentation to the board along with a petition supporting their position to keep a PreK-12 building open in Bern.  John indicated that by working together across the district, solutions could be found allowing the communities to keep their schools with the present configurations.  He also emphasized that Bern is very open to reducing costs and finding new ways to think about these old problems. Finally, John emphasized again that it is Bern’s desire to keep their PreK-12 school.
  • Approval was given to allow an Axtell patron the authority to open the Axtell fitness room to the public on Monday through Thursday evenings.

Executive Session:

  • Executive sessions were held concerning matters of non-elected personnel and student issues. 

    The meeting was adjourned at 10:00 p.m. following a tour of the Bern facilities.  The next regular meeting of the board will be on December 14, 2009 in Axtell.  Location to be determined.
