Axtell School

Exchange Student in Kansas

by Lucas Lopes

September 22, 2009

I'm Lucas, 16 yrs old, and I am an exchange student. I’m from Brazil; a country a little bit different than Kansas .Well, five months ago my biological family had the idea of giving me a new experience. The work was hard.  I waited 4 months to be chosen by an American family and it happened. My host family is the Terry & Karen Nanninga family.  They are not so different than my biological family.  They have a lot of cats, dogs, and like to enjoy the family moments.

My first week here was not to hard, I met a lot of people, family, and friends and went to a lot of different places.  Kansas is also different from my Brazilian city.  I mean…my city in Brazil has a population of 11 million and here, Axtell, its a little bit less, 400.  So in my first weeks I learned how to live in a small town with different places to go, different things to do and they are now my reality, and this is not a bad thing at all! Here you can see the sky,and the most beautiful sunset…it’s here! Here I can enjoy the beauty of a small town and the moments with my new family and friends.
