Axtell School

Homecoming was Hot!

by Michelle Carlin

October 02, 2009

Axtell High School held their 2009 Homecoming festivities on Friday, September 18, 2009.  The theme this year was “The Heat Is On”.  The parade and pep rally were held downtown in Axtell. The cheerleaders did an excellent job of hyping up the crowd. Each of the high school classes conducted games for the homecoming candidates.  These games brought laughter throughout the downtown area.  The community was there in support and rallied the football, volleyball, and cross-country teams and coaches as they gave their speeches.  The businesses decorated their windows for Homecoming festivities.  The winner of 'decorating your business' was Nemaha Rural Electric.

The crowning ceremony was conducted at 6:30 p.m. at the football field prior to the football game against the Frankfort Wildcats. The homecoming king candidates were Drew Kuckelman, Joel Ronnebaum, and Andrew Kuckelman.  The homecoming queen candidates were Katie Porting, April Gee, and Stacy Koch.  This year’s kindergarten crown bearers were Sierra DeKoning, daughter of Harley& Carrie DeKoning and Jordan Reyes, son of Claudia Monez and Alan Schmelzle. The candidates were driven in convertibles around the football field sidelines as their names were being announced by Austin Schmitz.  As they met in the middle of the field, the king candidates (in their football jerseys and jeans) escorted the queen candidates (in black dresses and high heels) to the podium.  The candidates Joel Ronnebaum and Stacy Koch were crowned King and Queen.
